A store with a real difference
Ten years ago, Holly and I had just set up a trade fair stand for Australian designers at Darling Harbour. We were walking up Union Square towards Harris Street in the heat.
A great gust of wind sent the sprawling British trees into a spin that parted the leaves long enough for us to glimpse an oasis; a stately, original sandstone store that despite its Australian DNA could have been transported from SoHo: tall front windows and massive ceiling height.
Then a ‘For Lease’ sign appeared. I forgot the heat and catapulted towards the window. Holly just said, ‘Let’s do it’, so we did.
From then on boxes of beautiful Australian designs – salad bowls from a Sydney girl, leather trays from a Melbourne team, architectural brooches, lamps, bags, dresses, hats, porcelain cups, glass vases, serving trays and hand screen-printed linen – lined up at the door of this first Urban Oasis and thankfully, so did you.So we’d like to repay your loyalty by presenting our new online store.
